A place called Steaks Eatery may seem like an unlikely place for a non-beef-steak-eater to frequent. But while the rather straightforward name does more than hint at the huge array of steaks offered at this restaurant, it doesn’t tell the tale of the huge and varied menu. My husband and I lived near this place for over a year before we checked it out, but we then soon found ourselves returning again and again.

Located southeast of Jackson just off Route 127, “Steaks” always boasts a packed parking lot. Their successful formula includes a lengthy menu, very reasonable prices, ample portions, friendly service and consistently appealing food. This place isn’t fine dining, but it’s a big step up from a diner or a bar and grill.

We’ve almost always had to wait for a table, even on a weeknight, but it’s always been worth it. Most entrées offer a choice of sides, and I appreciate the mostly-green (not white or brown!) salads with an array of veggies and chunky blue cheese dressing. A large basket of fresh, warm bread also hits the table with the salads, which adds much to the experience. My dinner selection usually includes fish or shrimp and some sort of potato; while the food isn’t “transporting,” it’s delicious and filling. Yet the restaurant’s speciality is, of course, steaks, and I know that dining companions have been enchanted by their meals.

People who drool at the thought of steak will likely appreciate the refrigerated case near the front, where the day’s selections are proudly displayed. For diners with dreams of being champion eaters, Steaks offers mega-sized burgers and steaks; those who finish get a t-shirt and a photo on the Wall of Fame.

Steak’s Eatery is the type of neighborhood gathering spot that is popular for good reason. I’m sure I’ll be back again soon!
